Turn Your Supermarket Trip Into a Baby Sign Language Academy

Baby models signs

Trips to the market with baby in tow are often associated with stress. If you have been at the receiving end of stares from other patrons after your little one throws a tantrum you know exactly what I am talking about. However, you are likely to be on the same boat as many mamas around the world. Going to the market without baby is not part of of your reality. But your reality does not need to be something to dread. Grab the cards you are dealt and make the best of it. A trip to the market can be a great opportunity to teach your baby new signs related to objects as well as desired behaviors. Here is a list of our favorites:

Quiet

Use the sign for quiet if your baby decides to be highly vocal. Always follow through with a reward in the form of acknowledgement, a treat or simply a smile. Here is the link that will show you the video dictionary entry for quiet.

Sit

If your little one is testing his or her balance and getting adventurous by standing on the cart this is a sign you will love. The sign for seat is super simple and has many uses throughout your daily interactions.

Thank You

When your baby displays a positive and desirable behavior on request always remember to sign thank you. Thank you is a sign that little ones learn through contextual imitation making it very important for us to use as often as possible.

In addition to behaviors and manners the supermarket is a great place to introduce our babies to the concept of raw foods. Often, our babies have a hard time making associations for food that may look different when cooked. Make a list of favorite fruits and vegetables and bring your flash cards along. Do the same for favorite foods like milk and cookies.

Keeping your baby engaged while shopping will greatly reduce the risk of a tantrum and will equip you to better meet his or her needs. Give it a try!

One of the best ways to get started with our program is through the use of our beautifully designed baby sign language kits. Our kits are rated five stars and contain everything you need from pre-birth until preschool.

Sarah learned her first 10 signs at six month and it made our lives much easier. Instead of screaming, she could tell us when she was hungry, thirsty, or tired. She learned another 50 signs by nine months and that was a blast. Now she is talking much earlier than the other children in her preschool and we think it is because of her signing.

We can’t imagine missing out on all the little things she shared with baby sign language. Thank You!
